The number one question I get from junior engineers: "How do you keep up with AI? It moves so fast."
Honest answer: I don't keep up with everything. Nobody does. And accepting that is the first step to staying sane.
My information diet: arxiv papers — I scan titles daily, read abstracts of interesting ones, and deep-dive maybe 2-3 papers per week. Twitter/X AI community — 15 minutes of scrolling catches the major announcements. Hugging Face trending — shows what the community is actually building with.
What I deliberately ignore: most product launches (90% are wrappers), most "AI will change everything" hot takes, benchmark wars between companies, and anything described as a "paradigm shift" (real paradigm shifts don't need marketing).
My filter: will this change how I build systems in the next 6 months? If yes, learn it. If no, note it and move on.
The engineers who try to learn everything burn out. The engineers who learn nothing become obsolete. The sweet spot is focused learning aligned with your career direction.
I'm deep in RAG, agents, and deployment. I'm aware of but not deeply tracking quantum computing, robotics, and generative video. That's fine. Depth beats breadth.
Pick your lane. Go deep. Stay aware of adjacent lanes. And stop feeling guilty about everything you're not learning.
