The most common pitch I hear from non-technical founders in 2026: "I have a great AI idea.

I just need a technical cofounder."

If you're an AI engineer with even moderate skills, you are the scarce resource in the startup ecosystem right now. Non-technical founders with ideas are abundant. Technical cofounders who can build AI products are rare.

This gives you extraordinary leverage:

You can join an existing startup as a technical cofounder with significant equity (20-40%). You can start your own company with your domain expertise + AI skills. You can negotiate from strength because every incubator and accelerator wants teams with AI builders.

What makes a good AI cofounder (beyond technical skills): ability to scope projects realistically (no, you can't build AGI in 3 months). Understanding of product-market fit. Willingness to build boring but necessary infrastructure. Communication skills to talk with investors and customers.

Where to find cofounders: Y Combinator's cofounder matching. Antler and Entrepreneur First (accelerators that help form teams). AI meetups and hackathons. Twitter/X and LinkedIn DMs (seriously, just reach out to people building interesting things).

The window is open. AI engineers who become cofounders in 2026-2028 will benefit from the largest startup funding wave in history.

You have skills the market values at a premium. Don't just sell them by the hour. Own a piece of what you build.
