The AI talent war is the most intense hiring competition in tech history.
Here's how to use it to your advantage.
The numbers: estimated 1M+ unfilled AI positions globally. Top AI engineers receive 5-10 recruiting messages per week. Counter-offers of 30-50% salary increases are common.
How to maximize your position:
Build visible proof of skills. GitHub, Hugging Face, technical blog posts. Recruiters search these platforms. If your work isn't visible, you don't exist to them.
Specialize in something specific. "ML engineer" gets lost in the crowd. "ML engineer specializing in multimodal RAG for healthcare" stands out immediately.
Be open to conversation even if not actively looking. The best offers come through relationship-building, not urgent job applications.
Negotiate from strength. In this market, you have leverage. Use it respectfully but firmly. Know your market rate. Ask for what you're worth.
Consider non-obvious employers. The highest-paying AI roles aren't always at AI companies. Banks, pharmaceutical companies, automotive manufacturers, and consulting firms often pay more than pure tech companies for AI talent.
And critically: don't job-hop every 6 months even though you could. Depth of experience at one company for 2-3 years is more valuable than shallow experience at five companies in the same period.
The AI talent war benefits engineers. But only if you're strategic about how you position yourself in it.
