Prompt Engineering is dying. Prompt Architecture is being born. And the salary difference is 3x.

A prompt engineer writes individual prompts. A prompt architect designs systems that generate, test, optimize, and manage prompts at scale.

What a prompt architect builds: dynamic prompt generation based on user context and intent. Automated prompt testing pipelines that evaluate hundreds of prompt variants. Prompt versioning and rollback systems. Context management that selects relevant information for each prompt. Multi-model routing that sends queries to different models with different prompts based on complexity.

The salary: Prompt Engineers top out around $80K-$120K. Prompt Architects — who are really systems engineers with LLM expertise — command $150K-$280K.

The skill upgrade path: learn DSPy (programmatic prompt optimization). Understand few-shot learning automation. Build prompt testing frameworks. Design context window management systems. Learn to think about prompts as code, not text.

Companies hiring: every company with a significant LLM deployment needs this. Most don't know the job title yet — they're hiring "LLM Engineers" and "AI Platform Engineers" who end up doing prompt architecture work.

The transition from prompt engineering to prompt architecture mirrors the transition from writing HTML by hand to building web frameworks. Same domain, completely different level of abstraction.

If you're currently a prompt engineer, the upgrade path is clear and the reward is significant.
