I analyzed 200 remote AI job postings from the last quarter.

Here's the reality of remote work in AI in 2026.

The good news: about 40% of AI roles are now remote-friendly, up from 25% two years ago. The talent shortage gives candidates leverage — companies that insist on office-only are losing engineers to remote-first competitors.

The nuance: "remote" means different things. Some companies mean "work from anywhere in our country." Others mean "work from anywhere in our timezone." A few truly mean "work from anywhere on Earth."

Roles most likely to be fully remote: ML Engineering, Data Science, AI consulting, MLOps. Roles that often require some on-site presence: robotics, hardware-adjacent AI, classified/defense AI work.

The compensation adjustment: many US companies now pay "location-adjusted" salaries. An engineer in Bengaluru might get 60-70% of the SF salary for the same role. Still excellent money. Some companies pay the same regardless of location — these are gold.

How to land remote AI roles from India or other non-US locations: strong GitHub portfolio (visible, verifiable skills), open source contributions (proves you work well async), timezone overlap willingness (US companies want at least 3-4 hours of overlap), and excellent written communication (remote work is writing-heavy).

The remote AI job market favors engineers who can demonstrate skills publicly. Your online presence IS your resume.

Build in public. The remote opportunities will find you.
