Government AI spending globally: $25B+ by 2027.

The public sector is becoming one of the largest AI employers — and the work is more interesting than you'd think.

Applications: intelligent document processing (automating bureaucracy). Fraud detection in government programs. Predictive analytics for urban planning. NLP for citizen services. Computer vision for infrastructure inspection.

India specifically: Aadhaar-connected AI services, digital governance platforms, smart city initiatives, defense AI, and agricultural advisory systems.

Roles: Government AI Consultant ($100K-$220K). Public Sector ML Engineer. Smart City Data Scientist. Defense AI Engineer. Government AI Policy Advisor.

The reality check: government AI moves slower than private sector. Procurement cycles are long. But the scale is unmatched — systems that serve hundreds of millions of citizens.

The career advantage: government AI experience gives you clearance, domain knowledge, and credibility that's valuable in adjacent sectors (defense contractors, civic tech, public health).

For Indian engineers: government AI initiatives through IndiaAI, Digital India, and Smart Cities Mission are creating thousands of roles. The pay is lower than private sector (15-30 LPA typically) but the stability and impact are significant.

If you want your AI work to serve the public good at national scale, government AI is an increasingly viable and rewarding career path. The bureaucracy is real. But so is the impact.
