Devin, SWE-Agent, OpenHands, Claude Code — autonomous coding agents are here.

And they're reshaping what it means to be a software engineer.

I've been using AI coding agents daily for 3 months. Here's the honest assessment:

What they're good at: boilerplate generation, unit test writing, simple feature implementation from clear specs, code refactoring, documentation generation, and fixing well-defined bugs.

What they still struggle with: complex architectural decisions, understanding nuanced business requirements, debugging subtle production issues, and anything requiring deep context about a large codebase.

The job market implication isn't "developers will be replaced." It's "the nature of development work shifts upward."

Junior tasks get automated. Senior tasks become MORE valuable. The engineer who can architect systems, define clear specifications for AI agents, review AI-generated code critically, and handle the complex problems AI can't — that person is now 5x more productive AND more valuable.

New roles emerging: AI Code Reviewer (specialized in reviewing AI-generated code). Agent Workflow Developer (building and optimizing coding agent pipelines). AI Development Operations (managing fleets of coding agents).

The engineers who resist AI coding tools will be outpaced by those who embrace them. Not because AI is better at coding — because AI + human is better than human alone.

Learn to work with AI agents. Your productivity and your career will benefit.
